History of Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh city:

In 1930, the French colonialists laid the groundwork for Tan Son Nhat Airport, fashioning a red dirt runway extending over 1500 meters for military purposes. The inaugural aircraft to grace the tarmac hailed from Paris, France, marking the airport’s debut in 1933.
Fast forward to 1956, and the United States took charge, replacing the original French runway with a robust concrete version, doubling its length to an impressive 3,000 meters. From then until the conclusion of the Vietnam War, both the United States Army and the Republic of Vietnam Air Force utilized Tan Son Nhat Airport as a key military installation.
Post-unification in May 1975, the Vietnamese government officially assumed control of Tan Son Nhat Airport, ushering in a new era that saw the commencement of commercial flights between Saigon, Hanoi, and the southern provinces. The subsequent years witnessed a series of continuous renovations, expansions, and upgrades to accommodate the burgeoning flow of travelers.
Looking ahead, the airport’s development plan outlines a trajectory of ongoing growth. Future expansions involve the addition of terminals, runways, aircraft parking lots, and more, with the ultimate aim of enhancing both size and passenger capacity. This strategic vision results in an expanded area exceeding 210 hectares, contributing to the overall 791 hectares of adjusted planning land. The evolution of Tan Son Nhat International Airport stands as a testament to its historical roots and its commitment to meeting the demands of an ever-expanding aviation landscape.
